Introduction

Founded in 2015, Mundi Ventures is a global venture capital firm that invests in early and growth-stage technology ventures. With a portfolio of over 60 companies, Mundi focuses on sectors like fintech, insurtech, deeptech and climate tech, all with the long-term mission to help society tackle complex global challenges through technology. Sustainability has always been at the heart of Mundi’s strategy, with a specific emphasis on climate change, gender equality, and strong governance.

Early on, Mundi formalized sustainability as a core pillar in its investment practices. Recognizing the importance of sustainability integration, Mundi brought on Yoko Kojima, an sustainability expert, to lead the strategy, implementation, and team development. However, as Mundi’s portfolio grew, they faced challenges in managing sustainability data collection, tracking core KPIs for the firm, and staying compliant with SFDR regulations. That’s when Mundi partnered with Kara to streamline and optimize these processes.

Mundi's sustainability pain points

1. Time-consuming data collection

Mundi relied on manual processes —spreadsheets and emails—to gather sustainability data from their portfolio companies. This fragmented approach represented over 20 hours each month chasing data, which led to delays, inconsistencies, and represented a significant administrative burden on the team.

Additionally, carbon accounting added layers of complexity, and required portfolio companies to use separate systems and tools to track their emissions.

2. Challenges with sector-specific sustainability metrics

Each fund at Mundi has different industry focus including Insurtech/Fintech, Deeptech, Climate-tech.  This thematic focus led them to look for specific, industry-focused KPIs. The resources the firm found were either too broad or too limited for their industry needs. In addition to that, Mundi was looking for a way to collect both impact and sustainability metrics and some custom industry or region-specific KPI.

3. Pressure to meet regulatory compliance

As with many other European funds, Mundi is now subject to SFDR requirements. As a GP that manages Article 8 fund, Mundi had to meet detailed regulatory reporting requirements. Keeping up with evolving regulations was time-consuming, and the firm needed a streamlined process to ensure compliance without diverting resources away from its core operations.

Kara’s solution: tailored sustainability and compliance for Mundi Ventures

Automated sustainability data collection

Kara replaced Mundi’s manual, fragmented sustainability data collection process with an automated, shared data infrastructure, serving as a one stop system of record for data. Kara’s platform not only consolidated data from all portfolio companies,, but also provided safe data storage. Sustainability data could now be collected efficiently, freeing up valuable time for the Mundi team.

Industry-specific KPIs

Recognizing Mundi’s sectorial focus on Insurtech, climate and deep tech climate risk, and gender equality, Kara worked closely with the team to implement a set of material indicators, such as measuring the percentage of first insurance policy holders, or tracking gender diversity within founding teams. These custom indicators helped Mundi focus on material topics, allowing for more meaningful sustainability tracking across its portfolio.

Streamlined regulatory compliance

Before using Kara, to stay compliant with SFDR, the team had to manually track updates and create detailed reports, which took up valuable time and resources. Kara’s platform changed that by automating sustainability reporting and providing real-time updates on regulatory changes. Now, instead of worrying about missing a compliance deadline or keeping track of new legal requirements, Mundi can focus on strategic decisions. The platform made compliance something they didn’t have to think about constantly, which was a huge relief for the team.

Results: measurable impact through Kara's platform

Mundi Ventures achieved significant improvements in their sustainability management, reporting, and overall portfolio performance:
